![]() Having Cassandra Cain just be some runaway is a little annoying… but you can read my thoughts on that here.īirds of Prey will arrive in cinemas on February 7, 2020. I’ve got to say, it’s nice to see DC diving deep into the weirder comicbook stuff - like Harley having hyenas that actually laugh. She then teams up with four other women Black Mask wants dead - the Gotham City police detective Renee Montoya ( Rosie Perez), Huntress ( Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary ( Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and troublemaker Cassandra Cain ( Ella Jay Basco). A couple canisters of cheez whiz later, she finds herself in trouble with another supervillain who wants her dead - Roman Sionis ( Ewan McGregor), AKA the crime lord Black Mask. The movie starts out with Harley ( Margot Robbie) breaking up with her not-so-forever love, the Joker. This movie showed arguably the most powerful female superhero in a movie to date. Instead of having the team be composed of Batgirl, Huntress and Black Canary, Batgirl’s been swapped out for Harley Quinn - turning the team of do-gooder superheroes into a team of aggressive vigilantes. This movie was an origin story, with Diana raised on Themyscira, but them leaving her home forever to battle the evils of World War I with a soldier named Steve Trevor. Pictures has released a new trailer for Birds of Prey - and boy, is it an upgrade from every other trailer we’ve gotten for this movie.īirds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) - yes, that is the movie’s actual full name - will feature the DC Comics superhero team of the same name, with a couple of adjustments. We're guessing, considering the movie is all about Harley's "emancipation" from her ex, director Cathy Yan and writer Christina Hodson probably didn't want to commit too much screen time to the Joker, which would've made it hard to justify calling Leto back in for a glorified background role.Harley Quinn struggles to get over the Joker in new trailer for Birds of Prey Whenever we do see Joker head-on, it's in animated form or drawings, none of which resemble the tattooed, metal-mouthed version of Leto. Birds of Prey reuses some footage of Leto and Margot Robbie from Suicide Squad for flashback purposes, and otherwise utilizes a body double, shot from behind or in silhouette as Harley recalls their breakup and other moments from their past, but we never see his face. Despite reports to the contrary, it appears that The Joker will actually feature in Cathy Yans upcoming Birds of Prey movie - although it doesnt look like. Is the Joker in Birds of Prey? No, Jared Leto's Joker doesn't appear in Birds of Prey, although the villain's involvement is a little more complicated. While Batman's absence is never explained in the movie (you'd think he'd take notice of Harley blowing up Ace Chemicals and Black Mask going on a murder spree around Gotham), Harley does namedrop him at one point before the post-credits scene: She tells Cassandra Cain that she named her pet hyena Bruce, "after that hunky Wayne guy." It's a fittingly tongue-in-cheek nod to the character without getting tangled up in the details. The conversation around abuse, both emotional and physical, has gotten far more nuanced, and in comics communities. ![]() ![]() Meanwhile, Birds of Prey is technically set in the same continuity as Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman, and Justice League, with Suicide Squad featuring a cameo from Affleck to explain how Harley got captured and enlisted into Task Force X in the first place. Birds of Prey has the potential to offer up something fun, fresh and timely. Matt Reeves' upcoming film The Batman is rumored to be set in the '90s (although that has yet to be officially confirmed) and will star Robert Pattinson as a younger Bruce Wayne, seemingly closer to the beginning of his career as Batman. Yet, neither Joker nor Birds of Prey are re-creating the Snyder aesthetic, but leaning into different methods of exploring the same idea: That there’s a way to make comic book movies as visually. Marvel may have popularized the closing credits scene trend. So cruel! (Any guesses what she was going to say?) Is Batman in Birds of Prey?As for the Dark Knight himself, Batman doesn't cameo in Birds of Prey - which makes sense, considering how muddled DC's Batman continuity is right now. Posted: 2:30 am The following contains spoilers for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). She begins, "Did you know that Batman f-" before the audio cuts out, leaving us hanging. Still, she offers a reward to those patient enough to wait, offering to reveal a juicy secret about Batman. Play As the credits end, Harley's voiceover returns, pulling a Ferris Bueller and making fun of anyone who stuck around for so long. Despite only appearing as a cameo during the pilot episode of 2002s Birds of Prey, Roger Stoneburners Joker played a huge role in the series.
